New Delhi, April 20. A Surat court on Thursday refused to stay Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a defamation case over his “all Modis are thieves” remark. The two-year conviction has led to his immediate disqualification from the Lok Sabha. Gandhi was convicted by chief judicial magistrate, Surat, on March 23, 2023. The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the Union government’s claims that same sex relationships were an urban, elitist concept, and consequentially the demand to recognise their right to marry, adopt children and have families was urban, elitist too. The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that it won’t get into personal laws of different religious groups, which frown upon homosexuality, while deciding whether to allow homosexual couples to marry, adopt and have a family. “We won’t get into personal laws,” CJI D.Y.
